Before completing this questionnaire, please read the Volunteer Information below.

  • Thank you for taking the time to complete the Volunteer Reference Questionnaire. Your honest and thoughtful feedback is invaluable in helping us determine the suitability of the applicant for the role of a CASA Volunteer Advocate. Below is an overview of the responsibilities and expectations of a CASA Volunteer to provide you with a clearer understanding of the position.

What is a CASA Volunteer Advocate?

A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteer is a trained community member appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of a child who has experienced abuse or neglect. CASA Volunteers work to ensure the child is safe, has a stable environment, and receives the support they need to thrive. More information can be found by visiting us online at www.elkhornvalleycasa.org.

    Responsibilities of a CASA Volunteer

    1) Build a trusting relationship with the child and maintain consistent contact

    2) Gather information by reviewing case records, speaking with the child, family members, social workers, teachers, and other professionals involved in the child’s life.

    3) Provide fact-based recommendations to the court regarding the child’s best interests.

    4) Attend court hearings and advocate for necessary services and resources.

    5) Monitor the child’s case to ensure court orders and support services are being implemented.

    6) Commit to at least one year of service to provide stability for the child.

    7) Complete a 30-hour pre-service training and 12 hours of annual in-service training to stay informed on child advocacy best practices.

    8) The time commitment varies depending on the case. Typically, CASA Volunteers work on one case at a time, which may involve one child or a sibling group. Some weeks may require only a few hours, while others may demand more involvement, depending on court dates and case developments. Volunteers set their own schedules, aside from attending required court hearings.

    Why CASA Volunteers Matter

Children in foster care often face uncertainty, instability, and a lack of trusted adults who can consistently advocate for their needs. CASA Volunteers provide a powerful, independent voice in the courtroom and the child’s life, ensuring they are not forgotten in the system. Research shows that children with CASA Volunteers are more likely to receive necessary services, perform better in school, and find permanent homes faster than those without advocacy.
